Cursor Breaks the Curse?

Despite continued interest from venture investors and companies like Microsoft and SpaceX, criticisms of Cursor’s business model have been persistent. Skeptics of the company point to its heavy subsidization of AI model access and dependence on frontier model pricing as major barriers to the company becoming profitable on its own. This week, however, Cursor branched out from these characterizations with the release of the Cursor SDK, a Typescript package that enables users to access the Cursor agent runtime, harness, and models used for Cursor’s own desktop app and CLI. This allows users to run multiple agents in parallel, locally or on virtual machines, and operate as agent managers, a step above review of individual diffs.

The hype surrounding this release hinges on the idea that as model capabilities converge (or at least surpass the bar for usefulness), the product layer may transcend the model layer in capturing customers and revenue. What isn’t clear from these reactions, however, is exactly what the moat is for Cursor’s SDK. It does have features (like file editing, shell execution, MCP support, codebase indexing, and runs that show up in the Cursor IDE) that Anthropic and OpenAI SDKs don’t yet have, though these may catch up. However, it does allow switching between models, which (1) won’t be possible if it is absorbed by Grok and (2) will matter less if models do effectively become a commodity. Whether model flexibility or advanced tooling will work as a moat for Cursor remains to be seen.
