Twitter has recently been inundated with anecdotes, memes, and praise of agentic AI assistant Clawdbot (renamed Moltbot as of this week at the request of Anthropic). Unlike Anthropic’s Claude Code and Google’s Antigravity, Moltbot wasn’t released by a frontier lab, but by freelance Austrian founder/developer Peter Steinberger. Moltbot was first released on January 1st, 2026, and has already accumulated 102K stars on GitHub. It’s being used as an omnipurpose assistant handling reservations, shopping, personal calendars, and managing other agents, tasks that earlier commercial AI assistants consistently failed at.
Early adopters of Moltbot give it instructions via WhatsApp or iMessage, using it to reply to emails, make appointments, and complete other tasks. One user described using it as “the first time I have felt like I am living in the future since the launch of ChatGPT.” Skeptics of the project have security concerns surrounding the system’s access requirements, and its ability to spend on expensive API calls and make purchases on users’ behalf.
What Moltbot can or can’t do, or how safe it may be, are important questions, but the biggest question is how much users can leverage AI using on-device inference. While users with Mac Minis or other personal devices are storing app data, conversation history, and workspace files locally, most use cases of the agent will still require API calls to existing LLMs, requiring subscriptions and ultimately utilizing off-device inference. For AI labs buying up access to memory, the status quo has not yet changed, but Moltbot is demonstrating what the future of consumer AI might look like.
