Apple is reportedly stockpiling inventory as key input supplies remain constrained, noting in its Thursday earnings call that inventory nearly doubled versus September 2025, even amid better-than-expected sales. A global memory shortage forced the company to raise Mac and iPad prices in June, driven by unprecedented demand from AI chipmakers like Nvidia.

To secure memory supply, Apple has been in talks with Chinese suppliers CXMT and YMTC. However, on Wednesday, a bipartisan group of senators led by Indiana Republican Jim Banks and New York Democrat Chuck Schumer wrote to Tim Cook urging Apple to drop the effort, noting both firms appear on a recently updated Pentagon list of companies believed to support Beijing's military. The senators called for a commitment covering chips for all Apple devices, even those sold exclusively in China, by August 21st. At the same time, Apple is cushioning the sticker shock by reorganizing its Apple Upgrade Program, announcing Tuesday a partnership with Klarna to lease iPhones, Macs, iPads and Watches from $17.99 a month.
