The release of Kimi-K3 last week has revived the now multi-year conversation about the commercial, regulatory, and technical feasibility of open-weight models versus proprietary models. The model’s success has raised concerns from government and industry players concerned about the geopolitical implications of dependence on models from non-allied entities, sparking interest in open-weight model alternatives to Chinese models.
These considerations are being made concurrently with investor and hyperscaler interest in Mistral, the leading open-weight model developer in Europe. This week, the FT reported that Samsung is considering an investment of hundreds of millions of euros in Mistral as part of a round valuing it at roughly €20B ($22.81B). Microsoft also announced a multibillion-dollar commitment to use Mistral’s expanded Europe-based GPU infrastructure to support delivery of its own cloud and AI services. While Mistral still lags proprietary-weight models and other open-weight models in benchmark performance, interest in the open-weight business model is likely to persist as the gap between model classes tightens.
